Malthusiasm: An Africa Dilemma

Summary
September 17, 2007
2. Chapter

Summary

“The people and the land” is the second subject that is mentioned by .E.E Njoku in Malthusiasm: An African Dilemma, 1986, pg 11-21. Njoku takes both subjects as being related in industrialization of Africa.
According to Njoku, the land of African is characterized by a diversified climate so that there is a huge place for agriculture which plays significant role for Africans in order to survive their lives; therefore, the big amount of population which is still increasing has dispersed around suitable land to supply the labor of agriculture (p 11- 12).
However, the technological growths about agriculture and also industry have shown up by many beneficial and significant outcomes according to Njoku (p 13-15). Improvement of agriculture has affected from many side of the way people are living as advantage because of increasing the incomes of Africans. Njoku, however, points out that agricultural and industrial sector are not competitive; thus, the rapidly increasing of industry can probably cause the unemployment in agriculture unless the agricultural sector can be developed as much as industry has been done (p 14).
Furthermore, the improvement of a country is occurred by investment in a country. However, Africans can not afford the expensive investments as much as the developed countries can do; thus, the capitalism which is divided into 3 categories; financial, human and social has been playing grade role in the situation of the country during the industrialization according to Njoku (16-18).
As a result, this improvement of the economy also brings the big differences about statues of people (Njoku, p18). People who live under the minimum- income level still live in poverty; therefore, hunger and diseases are still growing in society which is lack of increased human productivity and societal development according to Njoku (p 19).

Hello, Ibrahim,
How are you?

This is Alison.
The follows as below is my comment for your summary, no matter you like or not, it is cross my heart.
Hope you would accept my comments ;)

In Ibrahim’s report, he firstly pointed out the main problems of Africa followed by the author’s statement. He mentioned that one of the problems is that the population is growing faster than the production of food supply. Then he mentioned the author’s opinion by indicating that the growing population reduces food supply and agricultural industry, and afterward it causes diseases because of food scarcity. Further, based on Ibrahim, the growing population is due to polygamy. He then provided the author’s opinion that technology makes the differences between rich and poor even more dramatic, and it does not actually contribute to the African agriculture. Ibrahim supported his opinion by pointing out that he agrees that the main problem of a rapidly growing population is polygamy.
In my opinion, Ibrahim did not do particularly good or bad in evaluating his material, but he explained some thoughts regarding his topic when we threw questions at him.
From my point of view, I wonder why when I asked Ibrahim why the government of Africa did not want to teach the poor how to use technology to harvest their agricultural products, and Ibrahim stated that “ to educate the poor is capitalism.” I am also curious about what the government of Africa thought, and why technology cannot enhance the agricultural industry, and why the government does not educate poor people to use technology to produce more agricultural products, so that the poor people will not become poorer, and the gap between poor people and rich people could be decreased. Furthermore, technology will probably influence the amount of workers needed. Hence, it is the responsibility of Africa’s government to make backup plans for ordinary people, in case the technology decreases the amount of jobs which would increase poverty.

Have a good day, dude!

Hi, Ibrahim

what's up? you didn't come today.

Anyway, I'd like to talk about your summary.
Most of all, I could learn a lot about redical reasons of African situation. Always, I'm just thinking "Africa is poor originally", but I became to know it is because of gap between increasing population and poor supply of food and industrial factor. Your topic is really good, I think.
I'm just telling onething about umbrella sentence. Sometimes, I feel hard to recognize umbrella sentences in your paragraph. For exameple,
"However, the technological growths ~ as much as industry has been done (p 14)"
in this paragraph,I think, "Njoku, however, points out that agricultural and industrial sector are not competitive" is umbrella sentence, but it is located in the middle of paragraph, so it little bit hard to anticipate the contents of the paragraph.
But, I think you did good job. Eventhough it could be not easy text, you understood it and summarized it well.

Have a good weekend, bro~
